This morning I was talking to a group of approximately 20 business owners about data, as businesses we all have data that is important to us, this poses the question?

Would you still have a business if you lost all your data?
Well surveys show that 70% of businesses that suffer a major data loss are out of business within 18 Months…

So now you’re listening, lets first take a look at the different methods of backup commonly used and their issues:

Tape

Tapes need someone to change them everyday and they need storing off site, this is a manual task and has risk attached to it, tapes also become worn and stretched and are very expensive.

Removable Hard Drive

This requires requires someone to plug it in every day, is a moving part that suffers from wear and tear and hard drives do fail.

Solid State Storage (USB)

Again still requires manual intervention, large drives can be expensive, easily lost.

Google Drive/Dropbox (Cloud)

Here you need to be careful, read the terms and conditions, and look at where the data is being stored, you have have Data protection issues!

And now lets take a look at where we store our valuable backups

In the fire proof safe

this is good right, wrong, if there is a fire it is unlikely the fire brigade are going to let you in to the building so you can open your safe to get to your backup, if it is a gas explosion you could be hunting the area for your safe and who knows what state it will be in, also keep in mind fire proof safes and only fire proof for a small amount of time!

off site, At home, my mums house…

This is good, but depends on the media type, most media has moving parts and bouncing around in transportation does not help it, you should check regularly that it is healthy and maybe keep a second backup!

Most data loss is as a result of hardware or system failure, this is where you suffer a hardware failure and then find out that your backup has not been working properly or you have never had a backup!

Human error comes in a close second, this varies it its form and is anything from loosing the backup device, forgetting to change the tape, not connecting the disk and even not selecting the correct data!

Interestingly Natural disaster and viruses account for a very small part of data loss but is increasing.
