Flexible working is an option that seems to be appealing to more and more businesses across the UK at the moment, as bosses realise the advantages they stand to access if they turn to the method.
Whether it is allowing employees to work at times that suit them or the company, or permitting home working and remote operations, there are many reasons to invest in flexibility.
Peter Boucher, enterprise commercial marketing director at Vodafone UK, has written a piece for the Guardian in which he explained just why flexible working has become so popular. He noted there are “considerable business benefits” associated with the practice, which appeal to firms at this time.
He explained it is all about having people where they need to be, when they need to be there. That allows companies to make the best use of the technology available to them, whether this is through instant messengers or mobile internet.
Mr Boucher went on to note that business opportunities can be won and lost in a matter of minutes. Therefore, having people who are not chained to their desk is a massive plus, as they should be able to be more responsive from alternative locations.
This should particularly appeal to smaller organisations, as one of the major advantages these tend to hold over larger bodies is their responsiveness. If staff are offered flexible working options, this is only likely to increase.

Small companies in the UK lost out on millions of pounds in March as a direct result of the poor weather that plagued the country.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has told how more than half (55 per cent) of all small enterprises were affected in some way by the cold temperatures and snowfall that struck some parts of Britain. In total, some £174 million was lost by these firms, which could prove to be disastrous at such a financially sensitive time.
Mike Cherry, national policy chairman at the FSB, said: “We may finally have turned a corner into spring, but it’s been a long haul, following the coldest March in 100 years. While a few businesses have managed to take advantage of the weather many have found it difficult to manage. Not only have they had to cope with a lack of demand for products, but many have had to close.”
Another problem some organisations might find they encounter when bad weather strikes the UK is that some staff are unable to reach the office or place of work. This means productivity takes a hit and efficiency levels drop, as bosses are forced to stretch their remaining workforce to get things done.
